Text Box: At the member/guest doubles tournament at RiverLanes in Tulsa, OK, Jimmy Young and Sean Swanson led David Haynes and Kerry Painter by only 48 pins. Lurking less than 20 pins behind them were the teams of Rick Minier/Xeno Garcia (last year’s champs) and David Manning and Del Ballard. Any of the four could still win. Painter/Haynes and Manning/Ballard grabbed early leads on their respective matches. David missed a 7-pin to set them back a bit while Young/Swanson and Minier/Garcia came back with turkeys to make it closer. Then Manning and Ballard got it going again, stringing strikes. Entering the 9th frame, any team could still win. Minier only managed a spare in the 9th to take them out of it. Painter struck for a double in the 9th, as did Young. Team USA star David Haynes got up in the 10th with the potential to shut everyone out. He left a swishing 7-pin. Ballard got three strikes in the 10th to take the lead. Sean Swanson needed a double to win it. Anything less would place Text Box: them third. On the first ball…10 in the pit. He got the second one a little wide, but it came back to rattle them off the wall to give them the title. Whew! What a finish!
It was Jimmy’s second SASBA title and Sean’s third member/guest doubles title with three different partners. Rick Ramsey and Steve Szabina bowled great to grab fifth and Bob Glass and Tony Burton got 6th.
Thanks to Steve Inasy and staff for being gracious hosts. A Kegel shot was used and scoring conditions were tough, to say the least. With so many, high-revving releases and high-flaring balls being thrown from the inside, the big hookers just blew holes in the pattern, which made normal adjustments impossible for the older and straighter players. When you tried to move in to find more head oil, it was drier instead of oilier. Many, many good bowlers struggled. If you hooked it at your spares, every cross lane Text Box: shot was a new adventure. Several of the pre-tournament favorites backed up the last few games of qualifying, while lots of others were coming on strong. Lots of drama! Congratulations to all of those who made the finals for hanging in there and persevering. Rick Thurber and his partner Darryl Slauter shot a big game Saturday night to squeeze in, then climbed all the way to 7th place. Nice going guys.
Our next tournament is in two weeks at Don Carter’s Cityview in Ft. Worth, TX. It is a trio format with a super senior (60 & over) and two seniors on each team. Only one senior can be a champion. Jim King
