Text Box: SASBA RED HAT WALKATHON KICKOFF

We were a small but mighty group last Saturday as we invaded The Galleria in Dallas for our inaugural walk. It all began at the bowling center where seven brave Red Hatters met, and with Alene’s assistance, set our pedometers and clipped them on.

We have four teams of four participating, and each team got to select a name for their team. Team 1 (Debbie Ellison, CeCe Garcia, Barbara Redlinger, and Ellen Wall) remains unnamed, but I’m sure they will come up with an appropriate name as soon as they all get together. CeCe picked up her pedometer on Sunday so she is rarin’ to go! Team 2 (Peggy Brooks, Alene Hensley, Charlene Schneider, and Donna Smith) are now “The Hussies”. Team 3 (Jeanne Addington, Freda Cockrell, Renae Crouch, and Lisa Farrell) are the “Glitzy Chicks”. Freda Cockrell and I (with some help from Peggy) decided that was a good name for us. Renae and Lisa, hope you like it. Team 4 (Jan Colaluca, Nanci Johnson, Kathy King, and Bettie Sands) had the most members present although Jan was the only member who walked – Nanci was ailing and Kathy had to work. They adopted “The High Steppers” as their moniker.

After we got the pedometers set, Alene passed out daily mileage logs. Each team member is responsible for keeping accurate track of her daily mileage and reporting it monthly to her team captain who will in turn report it to Alene who will keep the master log. Alene will be sending out periodic progress reports so we can see how we stack up against our competitors. Remember, there will be three prizes. One for the Super Senior (60 and over) who walks the most; one for the Senior (below 60) who walks the most; and one for the team who walks the most. Alene will be sending each of you a mileage log and will mail the pedometers to those who were unable to pick them up. The shirts were not ready because unfortunately some of you were late to respond and we did not get our order in when we should have. Alene will notify everyone when the shirts come in. The contest officially begins on Thursday, March 1 and ends on November 30. Don’t forget to clip your pedometer on first thing Thursday morning. All steps count!

Peggy was an excellent chauffer and Alene did a fine job navigating us to The Galleria where we made a beeline for la Madeleine for lunch. We needed our strength to begin our inaugural walk. After lunch we split up and gave ourselves an hour and a half to shop and walk. Jan and I both did a little shopping and a lot of walking. We tried to keep our feet moving even when we waited in line at Starbucks for coffee. We walked forward and backward (people were staring) and then worried that walking backward might erase our steps forward. We never did figure out for sure if it did. Alene made Peggy walk up and down the escalators – those gals are serious! Freda ate ice cream and watched an accident on the skating rink – I hope she was moving her feet while she watched!

We had a great day and we missed those of you who weren’t there.

Get Walking! Queenie Jeanne

P.S. – Alene has not received checks from all of you who said you were going to participate. If you have not mailed your check, please get it in the mail ASAP.
