Text Box: COCKRELL/DUPONT WIN 1ST 70/60 DOUBLES!
Text Box: Win Cockrell outscored all the other 70 plus bowlers and Dave Dupont struck a lot and stayed clean as they led the qualifying in all but one game in the finals to win the inaugural Over 70/Over 60 Doubles at Corsicana Super Bowl this weekend. Entering the last game, Gene Rivers and Norm Clark had passed Win and Dave by 17 pins, so whoever won the last match would win the title, barring a huge game by either John Precourt/Avery LeBlanc or Bob Freehauf/Gary Dickinson in 3rd and 4th place and within reach. Early opens eliminated Bob and Gary and late open frames held John and Avery back, while the game stayed pretty close on Text Box: the title pair. A big four by Norm, followed by a turkey by Win and Dave gave them the lead. Norm rebounded with a strike in the 7th and Gene could pull within 5 pins with a double. He left a dead flush stone 8..as Win and Dave pulled away. It was Win’s 2nd SASBA title and Dave’s 6th. Bill Moore, Matt Stewart bowled great for 5th place.
No one can remember a scratch tournament with 42 bowlers over 70 years old. Maybe a record. It was great to see all the smiling, laughing, story-telling and good natured needling going on. We Text Box: decided to have this tournament just for fun, but everyone loved it and wants it back next year.
Thanks to Corsicana Super Bowl for being great hosts!
The foursome in two weeks is full, with a lengthy waiting list. The annual team tournament is open and you need to send your entries in early to reserve your spot. The last few entries might not get in.. As the total entries has to be divisible by 5. Computer picks the teams.
Text Box: It was the first finals for Bill Moore and Dale Howe. Great bowling guys. 300 games were rolled by Matt Stewart and Win Cockrell..both with Ebonite balls..earning a $100 bonus from Ebonite.
Gary Pfeil left the lily. Maury has a picture to Text Box: prove it. Kathy got a big cake! Freehauf’s elevator only has 1 floor(you will have to ask him about it). El Presidente almost made it. There were long-time/no see sightings of Charlie Farmer, Jay Glover, Roger Hornsby, Nat Segovia, Skee Text Box: Foremsky and Jesse Davis. There were 3 new 70 year old members. Osby bowled and ran out every shot. Next time he bowls, we will issue football helmets to bowlers on his right.
