Just a note here to say thanks again to Paul Holdeman. Its so great to see a proprietor “bust his butt” to not only raise extra money for the tournament, but to want to provide a “happening” for his local bowlers. He was rewarded with 140 entrants in the Pro-Am. Not bad for a 16 lane house in a town of 11,000. We would have had a full 64-man field, if not for an injury to Judge Transou in the Friday sweeper.
The next tournament is at Phil and Vickie Thompson’s Timber Lodge Lanes in Monticello, AR. It also is a 16 lane house and the field is limited to 64. As of this writing, we have 47 signed up. Please get your entry in early if you want to bowl. If you send a check, please email, PM, or phone to let me know you sent an entry.

Text Box: Phil Thompson bowled steady all weekend and pulled close to Charlie Hufford, who had led most of the way, with one game to go. Phil had to win the final game by at least 30 pins to pass Charlie. Phil started with double, spare, strike spare while Charlie was struggling with two early splits. In the sixth, Phil had made up the pins and started stringing strikes. Charlie, like a true champion, responded with a string of his own. The title was changing hands with every shot. In the tenth, Phil could punch out for 259, which would shut Charlie out. BAM, BAM, BAM! Thirty in the pit. Charlie got two more to make the final outcome close, just five pins. Congratulations to both for such a compelling final match.
Craig Slocum made his first SASBA finals and won 7 matches to grab $1000 and 3rd place. Phil Ballard got 4th and Jim Lee got 5th to round out the top five. Walls beat Swank!
Text Box: Thanks to Paul Holdeman and staff for their hard work in making this a memorable SASBA event. Paul is planning a New Year’s event with televised finals for next year’s tournament.
The shot was fairly even left and right and there was no style bias either as the finals were comprised of straighties, tweeners and big hookers.
Mel Wood got the “Dog of the Week” award with a brilliant 137. Charlie had a 300 and Brownie had an 800. Roger Hornsby got a check in his first tournament and Pam Vickery got a Sunday check. Walls beat Swank!
Ballard had the ultimate “Senior Moment” as he searched everywhere for his wristwatch, only to find it in his right shoe...one hour after he had put his shoes on. The Stines crashed a wedding party at the host hotel. The tournament director locked his keys in the car with the motor Text Box: Text Box: George Pappas
